Ospreys and Urdd launch Rygbi Bach

The Ospreys have teamed up with the Urdd to offer young children across the region an introduction to rugby via the Welsh language.

Rygbi Bach is a brand new concept aimed at three to six year olds and will teach participating children basic Fundamental movement skills, using a rugby ball.

Jointly operated by the Ospreys and the Urdd, the weekly sessions will be held at Llandarcy Academy of Sport, Garw Valley Life Centre and Pyle Life Centre, with participating children receiving an Ospreys/Urdd branded t-shirt.

Paul Whapham of Ospreys in the Community said:

“We are delighted to be able to work once again with the Urdd for the benefit of youngsters in our local community. We were fortunate to be able to welcome hundreds of pupils from almost 30 Welsh language schools across all three unitary authorities in the region to our St David’s weekend game against Leinster earlier this year, creating the largest choir ever to perform at the Liberty.

“It’s important that we continue to grow this relationship, encouraging children in the region to develop a passion for rugby, and for the Ospreys, from a young age.

“You’re never too young to enjoy picking up a rugby ball and running with your friends. What Rygbi Bach will do is use rugby-based movements and techniques to help participating children develop social and personal skills, as well as rugby skills, supporting their physical learning, all in the Welsh language.”

Aled Lewis, Regional Development Officer West Wales, for the Urdd Sports Department, said:

“It’s fantastic to be working in partnership with the Ospreys on our Rygbi Bach clubs. The clubs offer children their first taste of rugby with pathways in place for them then to become members of one of the many clubs within the Ospreys region. Due to the high number of Welsh language schools within the region, it’s important we provide opportunities for children to take part in sports activities through the medium of Welsh.”

The Urdd has over 5,000 members and 25 sports clubs within the Ospreys region.
