Cila Primary School in Swansea welcomed Ospreys players Hanno Dirksen and Tom Smith for a special visit last week.
The players took part in a question and answer session where they talked about life as a professional rugby player with pupils before heading outdoors to enjoy some rugby games with the youngsters, who have just enjoyed three weeks of coaching sessions with an Ospreys Development Officer.
Hanno and Tom spent time passing on tips to the children and helping them to discover the fun side of rugby in a session that was enjoyed by everyone.
Speaking after the visit, Hanno said:
“It was great to be able to visit the school and meet some of our young fans who really enjoyed themselves. Since I moved to Ospreylia the local people have really welcomed me, so to be a part of the community like this and to be able to say thank you by helping young children discover rugby is fantastic. Seeing them so excited like this makes me want to represent the region as best I can.”
Tom, who has led the team as captain on a number of occasions this season, added:
“It was brilliant fun. The children were great, they asked some good questions that they’d clearly thought hard about, and when we went outside to play rugby they had such a good time.
“Making visits like this is one of the most satisfying parts of the job as to spend time with young supporters out in the community always gives everyone a lift. Being a professional rugby player is a very privileged position to be in, and the least we can do is give up some of our time to hopefully inspire children to play or watch rugby.”
