Edinburgh defeated the Ospreys in an exciting Magners League encounter at the Liberty Stadium tonight.
The Ospreys named five of their six Lion's to start the match. Lee Byrne, Tommy Bowe, Shane Williams, Mike Phillips and Adam Jones were selected while Alun Wyn Jones was rested. Duncan Jones was named on the bench after returning from a long term injury that had seen him out for most of the season. Also, for the first time in his career, Academy and Wales Under 20's scrum half Tavis Noyle was named in the match day squad.
The first half was a very open affair with the Ospreys starting the stronger of the two sides. After nine minutes James Hook broke the Edinburgh defensive line before passing onto Shane Williams who went over to score, marking his 100th Ospreys appearance in style. Their second try came almost immediately after with Tommy Bowe squeezing over in the corner. Both conversions were missed by James Hook leaving the score 10-0. Edinburgh hit back in the 19th minute with a try by centre Ben Cairns. The ever reliable boot of Chris Paterson converted to bring the visitors within three points. Fifteen minutes later, Cairns crossed the line once again before wing Simon Webster scored an excellent Edinburgh try a couple of minutes later. With half time looming the Ospreys hit back with a Lee Byrne try. Dan Biggar, who'd taken over kicking duties, converted to make the score 17-19 to Edinburgh at half time.
The second half proved to be much tighter. The only points of the 3rd quarter came from two Chris Paterson penalties, which gave Edinburgh an eight point lead. On the 60th minute Hooker Huw Bennett scored. Dan Biggar converted and by following with two penalties soon after seemed to have sent the Ospreys on their way to victory. However, Edinburgh hit back with a try at the death to bring the scores level before they converted to sneak the win.
