Ospreys confirm signing of George McGuigan from Gloucester

The Ospreys announced today that hooker George McGuigan had joined the side from Gloucester on a short-term contract.

McGuigan, has been a staple of the Gallagher Premiership since making his debut for the Newcastle Falcons in 2011. The hooker has made over 150 appearances in the Gallagher Premiership for Newcastle, Leicester and Gloucester and was named in England’s training squad in 2022.

A master of the set piece, McGuigan knows his way to the try line and has scored over 50 tries in all competitions during his career. Outside of his set piece, the hooker also brings a powerful ball carrying ability to the table.

Speaking on his move, McGuigan said: “I’m excited to be joining a club with such a rich history. There have been some legends of the game that have played for the Ospreys, and I’m already looking forward to donning the jersey for the first time.

“The boys here have already made me feel really welcome, and there seems to be a real buzz around the squad about what we can do this season, so it’s great to be a part of that.”

Head Coach, Mark Jones, said: “George is a quality player, so it’s great to have him in the building. Hooker is a specialised position, so it’s important to have multiple options and we feel each of our players in the position all offer a point of difference.

“After speaking to George, I know he is keen to make an instant impact and whilst we were obviously gutted to lose Lew (Lewis Lloyd) to injury, we feel this signing further adds to our strength in the two jersey.”
