The 2016/17 Ospreys Cup was launched at Swansea University’s new Bay Campus this week.
Forty-seven teams from U15’s and U16’s from across the region ascended on the University’s school of management to find out their fate within the competition.
Run by the WRU rugby department in conjunction with the region to provide a high level of competition for the two age groups.
Each age group is split into two competitions, a main and a development competition. The main competition leads participants to a Cup and Plate whilst the development competition provides a level of competition leading to the bowl and shield.
The evening was a huge success with two Ospreys players, Dafydd Howells and Tyler Ardron, showing their support to the event. Howells is a graduate of the inaugural Ospreys Cup having played in the successful Abercrave team which won back to back silverware in the competition.
Joe Davies, the WRU Rugby Coordinator for the West of the region, thanked the players for their support of the competition, saying:
“It’s great to have current first team players to help us draw the Ospreys Cup for this season and, also, take the time to speak to players and coaches about their rugby experiences. To have a former winner of the competition in Dafydd present has added to the evening.”
This year’s competition will run using the new WRU Half a Game Initiative guaranteeing more players will experience the Ospreys Cup competition.
Ben Rose, WRU Rugby Manager for the Ospreys Region, added:
“The Half a Game initiative will ensure all players get the opportunity to play in the Ospreys Cup competition, the competition dates are selected based around Dewar Shield and Regional age grade games to ensure all players are available for their club sides, This initiative will ensure all players get game time. We envisage success will come from coaches and teams that develop the entire squad. From a WRU perspective, the measure of success for these teams will be an increase in the number of players playing youth rugby.”
The first round of games will be the U15s competition on the 11th of September across the region.
