Bridgend Athletic ended their season in style with an outstanding victory up at Tonmawr in the final of this years Ospreys Plate competition.
Bridgend Athletic Under 16’s – 21
Trebanos Under 16’s – 8
Ospreys Plate Final
The first half was fairly even with both sides attempting to run the ball at every opportunity although the Athletic looked a little nervous in their play. Trebanos took the lead with an early penalty, but Athletic’s response was immediate with outside half Michael Hathaway slotting over 2 well taken penalties to make the half-time score 6 – 3.
The second half saw the Athletic pack beginning to take more control of set play and they put Trebanos under severe pressure. Quick thinking from Number 8 Grant Davies saw him take a quick penalty and crash over the line for the games first try which was converted by Hathaway. The Athletic were now playing more relaxed and free-flowing rugby and it wasn’t long before the second try came from an excellent move by their mid-field backs resulting in centre Jo Morgans crossing the line untouched for an unconverted try. A further penalty from Hathaway wrapped up the scoring for the Athletic and a late consolation try by Trebanos took the final score to 21 –8. The Plate was presented to the Athletic captain Matthew Norman by Ospreys back rower Steve Tandy.
This was the final game at Junior level for this team and many will now move on to youth rugby with teams in the Borough. The quality of players continually produced by the Athletic club is a testimony to the efforts of coaches and organisers alike so many thanks should to them for all their input over the years.
