As Ashes fever once again sweeps the country, the Ospreys will swap rugby balls and kicking tees for willow and wickets next month when they face Mumbles Cricket Club in a fund raising 20/20 challenge match.
The match will take place at Mumbles’ picturesque Marespool Ground at Plunch Lane on Friday 7th August, with the first over to be bowled at 4.30pm. Admission will be by programme, costing £2, and there will also be a barbecue on the evening.
Names already confirmed for the Ospreys team include Jonathan Thomas, Tom Smith, Jamie Nutbrown, Ian Evans, Marc Breeze, Head Coach Sean Holley and Director of Coaching Scott Johnson.
Sean Holley commented:
“There are a few keen cricketers in the camp so we are looking forward to the match. We are always keen to give something back to the local community wherever and whenever possible, and are particularly keen to help local sports organisations in whatever way we can given the excellent work that they do in their own areas. Mumbles Cricket Club are a particularly good example of this, with a particularly active junior section, so it’s a pleasure to be able to go along and help them raise some much needed funds.
“For the Ospreys, the match provides us with an opportunity to break up pre-season training with a different, fun, activity where the boys can relax in each other’s company before the hard work continues ahead of the new season, and will allow some of the new players to bond with the rest of the squad away from the usual environment.”
Mumbles Cricket Club’s history extends over 100 years and today it fields three League XIs on Saturday’s, a Midweek League XI, and seven Junior League sides. In 2008, the club was awarded with the prestigious ECB Clubmark accreditation. The Marespool ground has Minor Counties status after hosting one-day cup fixtures for Wales.
Further details of the day, including confirmation of the full Ospreys XI, will be brought to you at www.ospreysrugby.com as soon as possible.
