Rugby festival aims to increase Tata Steel's

120 primary school children participated in a special festival jointly hosted by the Ospreys and Tata Steel RFC in Port Talbot.

Four schools took part in the day - Blaenbaglan , Tirmorfa , Central and Sandfields – which was aimed at growing player numbers in the area and introducing new players to Tata Steel’s mini and junior sections.

The festival allowed children from the schools – who have all been benefiting from coaching sessions delivered by the Ospreys Community Rugby Team – to enjoy what was for many a first taste of competitive rugby in a fun and relaxed environment.

Organising the festival was Liam Evans, WRU/Ospreys Participation Officer for Neath Port Talbot, and he said that events like this were an important way of increasing interest in rugby among young Ospreylians.

“It’s great to see so many school children enjoying rugby at their local club” he said.

“The Ospreys philosophy is all about development from within, and it is essential that we encourage more youngsters to take up the game if we are going to remain sustainable in the long term. By working with local schools and clubs we can encourage participation, driving children who are interested in playing the game towards their community club.

“In terms of doing that then it was a great success with 120 children coming into direct contact with Tata Steel RFC, most for the first time, and we are looking forward to following this up and seeing what boost it gives the club.”

Anyone with children aged from U7 to U13 in the local area who want to take up rugby are encouraged to pop along to Tata Steel RFC and join in the fun on a Tuesday evening.
