Round 2 of the Welsh Youth Cup and Bowl and Round 1 of the Welsh Youth Plate, take place this weekend with 20 Youth Teams from the Ospreys region still playing for an opportunity to reach Finals Day
Last year’s Plate winners Gowerton, came through a fixture away at Cwmavon RFC in round 1 of the Cup, winning 34-0.
Reflecting on the game, Gowerton Head Coach Dean Charles was pleased with the performance:
"As expected it was a really tough match that was played at a very high standard and was really competitive throughout. It was also refereed extremely well with the ref allowing both teams to play and gaining the respect of both sides from the start. The game was truly a credit to all concerned with both clubs, and was an excellent advert for Welsh Youth Rugby."
They face another big challenge this weekend for Round 2 in the form of Paul Garland’s Vardre side who came through a close encounter to beat Bonymaen 29-27 in Round 1.
Another mouth-watering fixture takes place with a huge local derby in the Bowl competition as Nigel Evans’ Bryncethin Youth come against close rivals Tondu Youth aka The Waterwheelers, coached by Lee Manning. With Tondu in Ospreys B League, and Bryncethin C, they rarely get the opportunity to compete against each other, with the last fixture taking place in January 2015, with Tondu coming through as winners.
Other notable all Ospreys region derbies across the competitions include; Dulais Valley v Bridgend Athletic, Morriston v Upper Swansea Valley, Trebanos v Porthcawl and Cwmtwrch v Briton Ferry.
